A Very popular rule to follow in conventional or digital photography is the rule of thirds.

This rule states that you should place important or interesting elements at specific places within the photo. These desirable positions can be visualized by dividing the image into three sections both horizontally and vertically. The intersections of these lines are the positions within the photo that you should have the most interesting bits of the photo.

An example of this would be to place the eye-line of the person you are photographing 1/3 from the top of the photo.

Remember all tips should be used as a guideline only, as rules were made to be broken!
